The New San Diego Recycling Rules You Need To Know

New recycling rules in San Diego went into effect on April 1 after City Council passed a new ordinance that brought the city's rules in alignment with California guidelines.

According to CBS8, there were previous exceptions to recycling rules in the city that no longer apply.

"If they had four cubic yards per week of collection or more, they had to recycle, but if they had less than four cubic yards of collection, they did not have to," Ken Prue, the city's Recycling Manager, told CBS8

Under the new rules, all properties must recycle and multi-family properties will have to arrange for the recycling of organic materials like yard trimmings and wood scraps.

"For those new properties that were previously exempt from the requirements, there will be an educational focus," said Prue. "By July, that will shift to a traditional enforcement."

All properties must recycle the following items: plastic and glass bottles and jars, paper, newspaper, metal containers, cardboard, rigid plastics including clean food waste containers, jugs, tubs, trays, pots, buckets and toys.

However, some exemptions may be considered if a multi-family or commercial property generates 0.001 cubic yards or less per week of trash and recyclables.
