Coronado High School football coach Kurt Hines is going viral after posting a reaction to a student quitting the sport that surprised many.

"This is my 24th year coaching high school football," said Hines in the video posted to Twitter below.

According to NBC7, Hines is on his fifth season coaching for Cornado High School.

Just before practice on Wednesday, September 15, Hines said some words that you might not expect from a football coach.

"I just had a young man come in and quit, and I couldn't be happier," said Hines. “He (the player) started to explain that they’ve always been a football family, they’ve always loved it, my father, my brother. I stopped him and I said 'Do you love it?' And he just breathed this deepest sigh of relief and said, 'No.' I said I’m proud of you."

Since he posted the video it has gained close to two million views and tens of thousands of likes, and several thousand retweets.

“I’ve known him for a long time and he said, ‘Coach, I thought you were going to be so mad,’” Hines said in an interview with ABC 10News. “I looked at him and I said, 'I love you. I’m just proud of you,' It was great to see that smile.”

One of the assistant coaches also told ABC 10News that the coaching staff and the team have been supportive of their former teammate.

“There are some people on social media who said quitting is the easiest thing to do," said Hines. "It’s not. Quitting is hard because everyone in the world is going to judge you for it and all that stuff."
