Ed Sheeran has a new Christmas song, "Under the Tree," and it's arrived just in time for the holiday season.
The melancholy "Under the Tree" hears Sheeran sing about a lost love he is hoping to get back, as the chorus goes, "There is nothing under the tree/ That I wished for I want you to come back to me/ And be like before Have I lost you?/ Nothing will ever fill the hole/ My heart will be here under the tree/ Just letting you know."
"Under The Tree," written by Ed and Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid, is featured in the new animated Netflix holiday film, That Christmas, which debuts on the streaming platform on December 4th. The song comes with an accompanying music video, which stars Sheeran as himself, and his animated self, along with Claudia Jessie (Bridgerton's Eloise Bridgerton) who plays his lost love interest as the visual shows his life solo, compared to the happy memories with his former flame.
In a statement, Sheeran explained of the new holiday song and movie, "Richard Curtis made my fav Christmas film, and TV special. He came round my house in 2021 and showed me a rough of his new one, then asked me to make a song for it. How could I resist. Having kids, I struggle to find great great movies for very young kids to watch at Christmas, and this ticks all the boxes. This song is written about a character in the film who wants to spend Christmas with his dad, but doesn’t get to. It’s a heartbreaking scene, and something so many people go through every year being alone at Christmas. Hope everyone loves the song."
