San Diego’s Iconic Stone Brewery Purchased By Japan’s Sapporo

San Diego County's largest brewery, Stone Brewing, has been acquired by Japanese beer giant Sapporo for 165 million dollars.

Sapporo intends to produce its beers for distribution in Stone's Escondido brewery and double Stone's current production.

Stone will continue to brew its beers, as well as operate its seven tap rooms with existing branding, management and workforce.

Stone Distributing is not part of the sale, and will become an independent company under current ownership, with a portfolio of 42 craft brands.

Before the deal, Stone was the largest producer in San Diego and the ninth largest craft brewery in the United States, according to the Brewers Association.

The county's new largest producer of craft beer will become Ballast Point, which was just returned to San Diego after being bought by Kings & Convicts.

The third largest craft brewery, Modern Times, was just purchased by Brewery X in Anaheim.
