Jamari Dent, 11, a special needs student, attempted suicide after teachers and students from 2 different Chicago schools would bully him, calling him "stupid," "dumb," "retarded," among other words.
A teacher at one of the schools, Evers Elementary, would bully him about his learning disability in front of the class. She is also being accused of physically assaulting and injuring Jamari. He was later transferred to Woodson Elementary where the bullying from teachers and students continued.
Jamari attempted to hang himself in his bedroom using a sheet in February of 2018 before being found by his 9-year-old sister. His mother, Teirra Black, performed CPR for about 15 minutes until medics arrived. Luckily, doctors were able to save Dent's life, but he had already suffered permanent brain damage and had to be hospitalized with a ventilator... possibly for the rest of his life.
His mother, pleaded with the schools to help the student but instead got with attorney Michael Oppenheimer and filed a lawsuit against the 2 schools - Medgar Evers and Carter Woodson elementary.
