Susan Norman, 89, took a big leap on Monday, July 12.
The Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego and the San Diego Junior Lifeguards brought back the SDJG Pier Jump off the Ocean Beach Pier on Monday.
At the event, swimmers jump into the water to fundraise money for junior lifeguard scholarships and free swimming lessons for the community's underserved youth.
Norman was one of the featured swimmers this year. She was also the first octogenarian to rise to the challenge, according to the foundation.
“I like to do things like this,” Norman told FOX5. “I mean, I like it, but it makes me somewhat nervous to know if I could do it because I haven’t done anything like this in so many years.”
Norman has raced in triathlons in the past and even won an Ironman race.
She took the 25-foot plunge with her grandsons Noah and Calvin.
The two told FOX5 they never thought they would be jumping off the pier with their grandmother.
"I was shocked," said Calvin.
Non-lifeguard participants are charged $100 per jump to raise money for the foundation.
According to FOX5, six hundred people jumped off of Ocean Beach Pier and raised tens of thousands of dollars.
