San Diego officials are urging residents to make a wildfire preparedness plan.
California firefighters have responded to over 4,600 wildfires which have burned more than 73,500 acres of state and federal lands, reports City News Service.
In a press conference at Gillespie Filed, Supervisors Joel Anderson and Nathan Fletcher were joined by representatives from Cal Fire, the County Fire Protection District, San Diego Sheriff's Department, and San Diego Fire-Rescue.
Nearly 80% of unincorporated land in San Diego County is in high or very hire hazard severity zones, reports CNS.
"As a long-time resident of Alpine, I have witnessed firsthand how devastating wildfires can be," said Anderson. "Wildfires do not discriminate in their destruction."
"If evacuation orders are made, leave early for your safety and so firefighters can do their job," said Kelly Martinez, county undersheriff. "Plan, prepare and stay aware."
According to the California Fire Foundation, residents should bring flammable items indoors, turn off propane/gas, close windows, and doors but leave them unlocked, locate pets, check on neighbors, and make sure there is an evacuation supply kit in the vehicle.
An evacuation supply kit should have:
- Food and water
- First-aid kit
- Phone chargers
- Copies of important documents
- Prescriptions and eyeglasses
