Where Does San Diego Rank Among The Fittest Cities In America?

A new study called the ACSM American Fitness Index ranked how active American cities were from 2020-2021.

The goal of the index is "to increase awareness of how cities are performing across a range of health and community measures to spark meaningful discussion and advance action to make their residents stronger, fitter, and healthier."

So where does San Diego rank on the index?

According to the Fitness Index, San Diego is the 15th-fittest city in the U.S.

In addition, San Diego and Chula Vista tied for the 10th spot in the study's Top 10 Cities Getting 7+ Hours of Sleep. The two cities also met the study's aerobic activity guidelines.

The study also ranked cities on personal health scores of each cities. San Diego was ranked No. 8 ahead of other California cities like Oakland and Santa Ana.

According to the study, the top 20 fittest cities in America are:

  3. Seattle, Wash.
  4. Denver, Colo.
  5. Madison, Wis.
  6. Washington, D.C.
  7. St. Paul, Minn.
  8. Irvine, Calif.
  9. Portland, Ore.
  10. Atlanta, Ga.
  11. Oakland, Ca
  12. Boston, Ma
  13. San Francisco, Ca
  14. Chicago, Il
  15. San Diego, Ca
  16. Buffalo, Ny
  17. Boise, Id
  18. Sacramento, Ca
  19. Austin, Tx
  20. San Jose, Ca
