East CK Trading, Inc recalled its "8-ounce packages of Licorice Plum food treats" on May 1 due to the undeclared presence of a common ingredient intolerance.
According to the United States Food & Drug Administration, the recalled product, distributed to retail stores nationwide (including stores in California) did not include an ingredient callout for sulfites, which poses the risk of "serious or life-threatening reactions" to individuals allergic to the ingredient missing from the labels.
Per the FDA, "The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the Licorice Plum revealed they contained 29.1 milligrams per serving."
The recalled products, with UPC code 0077-20729, also contained "unallowed color, Amaranth (E123)."
There have been no allergic reactions reported as a result of consuming the mislabeled Licorice Plum food treats as of May 5. Officials are urging consumers who have a sulfite allergy to return the item to the place they purchased it for a full refund.
Concerned individuals who purchased the recalled Licorice Plum food treats can contact the company at 1-718-857-0008.
