Big changes could be coming to Mission Bay. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria is pushing for redevelopment.
The Mayor wants a conference center, restaurant and two new marinas. This would be built on 28 acres of land on the Southwestern portion of Mission Bay Park.
Mayor Gloria has asked the City Council to declare three parcels in the city owned park as surplus land, that would be the first step toward redevelopment.
However, the Surplus Lands Act is generally used to develop affordable housing reports the Union-Tribune, and that's not on the radar for the city's master plan.
Instead, the city wants to offer three long term "ground leases" to redevelop the land.
Mission Bay Park formed more than 60 years ago. It is supposed to be preserved in perpetuity as public parklands.
