An Important Message About Sun Safety

Doctor Jeff Benabio, chief of dermatology for Kaiser Permanente San Diego, has an important message about sun safety.

Summer has arrived and with it, the temptation to head to the great outdoors and explore sunny San Diego. It's also a time to pay special attention to your skin and to know how to stay safe in the Sun.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. The good news is that most skin cancers can be cured if they're diagnosed early and treated promptly.

To lower your risk of getting skin cancer, you should:

  • Protect yourself from sun damage even on cloudy days. The simplest way to do this is to limit your time in the sun.
  • Avoid spending too much time in the sun during midday hours.
  • Always wear protective clothing, a hat, sunglasses, lip balm, and sunscreen with a minimum 30 SPF
  • Check your skin regularly, including your scalp.
