U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says tower equipment at San Diego International Airport needs to be updated and replaced.
Duffy was in San Diego Thursday, promoting President Trump's new "Big Beautiful Bill," which he says would help pay for updates to air traffic control systems in San Diego and across the country.
San Diego International Airport is the busiest, single runway, commercial airport in the country. However, after his tour, Duffy said much of the equipment he saw is a mess. Duffy said the airport tower is in dire need of an upgrade, which includes fixing a leaky ceiling, roof repairs, and new window shades.
President Trump's bill would allocate $12 and a half billion dollars towards upgrades, including modernizing air traffic controllers communication hardware, and purchasing new radios.
In 2024, San Diego International had its busiest year ever, with nearly 25 and a half million passengers passing through the airport.
