Dear Community,
This year, our counseling and administrative teams have noticed a sharp increase in the use of vaping devices by our students. These devices can be used to smoke flavored vapor, nicotine, or THC infused wax or oil. As we continue to educate our staff and students about this topic, we want to provide information to you as well. Know that many of these devices look like USB chargers, flash drives, and other inconspicuous items. These are commonly called “vapes”, “pens”, “juuls”, “pods” and “stiizy pens”. Teenagers are intentionally being targeted and marketed these devices stating that they are not harmful by manufacturers, and flavors include cotton candy, chocolate, gummy bears, banana bread, sour patch, and many others. While this is not all of the information available, we hope that it begins the conversation that you can have with your student. There are numerous websites and resources available online, and we encourage you to seek that out.
Most importantly, please talk to your student about the topic of vaping. We hope that with the dialogue between parent and child, this awareness will help to begin to curb the use we see in our students.
