North San Diego County fire fighters will be on the streets collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association this Friday, October 4, 2019 from 6:00am to 2:00pm.
While this is an annual activity, this year's effort has special meaning as multiple fire houses are participating to honor the brother of a San Marcos Fire Fighter who recently passed away from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Continuing a 65-year tradition of giving strength to the MDA community, participating fire fighters include those from:

- Encinitas, Local 3787
- Rancho Santa Fe, Local 4349
- Escondido, Local 3842
- Vista, Local 4107
- Fallbrook, Local 1622
- Palomar Fire Academy
Over 100 dedicated fire fighters will hit the streets with boots in hand asking pedestrians, motorists, customers and other passersby to make a donation to MDA on October 4, 2019 from 6:00 AM through 2:00 PM at the following intersections:
- W. San Marcos Blvd and S. Rancho Santa Fe Rd.
- San Elijo and Elfin Forest
- Mission Rd. and Woodland Parkway
“This is a particularly special Fill The Boot on October 4th as it hits home for one of the San Marcos Fire Fighters, who has been a pillar of support to MDA for many years, and has recently lost his own brother to Muscular Dystrophy. We are proud to see so many north county fire fighters join San Marcos Local 4184 to Fill the Boot to help provide the funds needed to find treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that severely limit strength and mobility,” said Executive Director Tanya Berg. “The dedication of these fire fighters to MDA’s mission is unwavering, spending countless hours both with Fill the Boot and MDA Summer Camp, to care for the kids and adults in North County.”
Funds raised through the North CountyFill the Boot event in 2019 will help the MDA save lives and lift those up in need, by providing the MDA with vital resources to advance their mission of driving innovations in science and care for the neuromuscular community. Contributions have helped fund groundbreaking research and life-enhancing programs such as state-of-the-art support groups and Care Centers, including the MDA Care Center at Rady Children’s Hospital and UC San Diego.
They also help send more than 40 local kids to “the best week of the year” at MDA summer camp at Camp Cuyamaca – all at no cost to their families.
In addition to Fill the Boot drives, fire fighter contributions from year-round local events, including Firefighter Chili Cook-off and Tailgate help support MDA’s efforts to raise awareness and provide professional and public education about neuromuscular diseases.
