Three zip codes in San Diego County have the highest number of homes with a high wildfire risk.
Those zip codes include homes in Scripps Ranch, San Marcos and Rancho Penasquitos.
- 92131 – Scripps Ranch: 7,885 homes
- 92078 – San Marcos: 7,495 homes
- 92129 – Rancho Peñasquitos: 6,291 homes
The wildfire risk analysis comes from a data analytics firm that works with insurance companies to evaluate fire risks. The higher the risk, the higher your premiums are. In some cases, insurance companies will not renew existing policies.
Because it's become harder to insure these homes in high risk areas, more California homeowners are turning to the California FAIR Plan. The plane is a state-backed last-resort insurance program that covers more than 420,000 homes and businesses, more than double what it covered just five years ago.
