When Hailey Bieber welcomed son Jack Blues Bieber last year, she was not only living in the joy of becoming a mother but she was also experiencing a serious complication following his "scary" birth.
In a new interview with Vogue, the 28-year-old model opened up about facing a life-threatening postpartum hemorrhage after welcoming her and husband Justin Bieber's first child in August 2024, per Page Six. The serious condition is characterized by excessive bleeding post-birth and poses a significant risk. Hailey noted that while she had faith in her doctors, "you start to get a little freaked out" during a medical emergency.
"I trust my doctor with my life," she said. "And so I had peace that I knew she would never let anything happen to me. But I was bleeding really badly, and people die, and the thought crosses your mind."
Hailey detailed her "crazy" birth experience and how even though she had been preparing with breathing exercises, workouts, acupuncture and pelvic-floor therapy, things didn't go exactly as planned. She revealed that she was induced after leaking amniotic fluid at 39 weeks and was given Pitocin to kickstart contractions as well as a Foley balloon that is inserted into the uterus to promote cervical dilation.
"That s--- was so crazy," she said, admitting that the entire experience was "a little bit scary." "That was not fun. They broke my water. I went into labor and I labored for a few hours [without an epidural]."
The Rhode founder also explained how she felt "self-hatred" after giving birth and struggled so much with body dysmorphia that she would look for negative comments about her appearance to confirm her own thoughts, a cycle that only made her feel more depressed. She has since been learning how to give herself some grace.
"Every day I have to talk to myself, like, Hailey, you had a baby," she said. "You grew a human. You birthed a human. It's okay. Give yourself grace. Give yourself time."
